I finally decided to do it.
If you know my lifestyle, you might wonder how I’m still alive.
Drinking, smoking too much & at least 2 litters of Coca-Cola for more than 10 years everyday.
Luckily, I don’t have any weight issue, but I’m pretty sure if that was the case, I wouldn’t be here writing this today.
Being hired to work here at the Alkazone water company was probably the best thing that has ever happened to me.
Surrounded by all the health-conscious employees working here, I felt weird even going outside to have a cigarette.
It was time to make a change.
I did try 3 day water fasting a week ago, but failed on the first day.
It was extremely hard since I am a single parent who has to cook for my 14 year -old son who eats non-stop.
Skipping breakfast and lunch wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.
I always ate 3 meals a day, so I thought it would be more difficult.
However, the dinner was totally different animal, especially since I have to cook.
3-Day Fast, Day 0
The Last Meal
Already having failed once, I was determined not to fail again this time.
So, for dinner, I had a big steak, wine, desserts & the whole nine yards. ( Of course, beer and soda as well )
I ate to the point where I could not eat anymore.
Then, I went to sleep feeling like a marathoner about to start his first race.
3-Day Fast, Day 1
Setting Off on a Voyage of Self-Discovery
My first day was kind of like that of an early explorer setting out in search of the New World. I wasn’t entering new territory since—but this time it felt different. This time I wasn’t turning back. I felt anxious and nervous.
What if I fail again?
I was worried, but what the hell……..
Monday morning started as usual with my getting ready for work routine, followed by a bunch of online computer work.
Surprise!
I skipped lunch at work, but it just seemed something was different this time.
Too easy…..perhaps because I already tried this a week earlier and know what to expect?
Alright! I was ready for a big challenge…..the dinner.
When I got home at 6pm, of course my son was telling me to feed him.( He doesn’t like takeout foods )
So I quickly made a spaghetti for him.
Believe me, it wasn’t easy to cook when you skipped two meals already.
I couldn’t help but contemplate. Battling myself not to eat every minute. So, I just drank a cup of milk. (Is this cheating? I just thought it was better than eating that delicious looking plate full of spaghetti )
Surprisingly, a cup of milk really filled me up just for that moment.
As soon as I finished cooking, I took a shower and hit the bed right away.
Longer I stayed awake, longer I would be hungry.
I usually have a trouble going to sleep when I’m hungry, but surprisingly, I slept like a baby.
3-Day Fast, Day 2
Uncharted Territory
When I woke up in the morning, yes…I was lethargic. But, felt pretty good.
I knew once I complete the first day, the rest of the days would be, somewhat.easier. ( Wouldn’t want to give up too easy after a long first day )
Feeling Electric
From the morning of day 2, my mind felt electric. I heard many people talk about the mental clarity, AND YES, it is true.
It’s hard to explain. Your body’s tired, but your mind can think clearly.
Plus, I am not exaggerating when I say this, I was recently dealing with blurry vision, but it was gone.
Not saying that my eyesight got better, but the blurry vision was gone even as I write this. Wonderful !
This, I found out afterward when I read some books on the physiology of fasting, is entirely to be expected. My brain was running on cleaner fuel than it was used to and my entire body was benefitting from hormonal boosts.
Dinner time yet again
Skipping breakfast and lunch was not a problem at all. If anything, I found the 2nd day much easier than the first day.
The problem was the dinner again.
I wasn’t sure if I can do it, so I called for a local Chinese take-out which was rare for my son.
He enjoyed it actually, and I was able to just take a shower and hit the bed right away, just like the night before.
Trying to go to sleep at 7 is not easy. I definitely struggled for a while, but eventually fell asleep. Thank God.
3-Day Fast, Day 3
The last day
Getting ready to go to work again. Glad to do it since it felt easier to skip a meal at work than at home.
I heard other people talk about what they see in their toilet. Strangely, I did not see anything unusual.
In fact, I was prepared not to go to the bathroom on the 2nd day & 3rd, but I went 3 straight days at a normal time.
It was a challenge…..I sat on the toilet for a longer time than usual. It wasn’t much, but I was happy to go. I felt great.
I wasn’t really thinking about the food like the previous two days.
Lethargic, definitely. But feeling like a new person
The weirdest feeling, though? My mouth.
My mouth was like the factory of a company that had just gone bankrupt. It’s all spic and span and ready to go, but empty. My breath felt strangely fresh and empty and my jaw tight from lack of use.
The End
As I write this, I have 3 more hours of work, then I’m off to my first meal in 72 hours.
I couldn’t stop daydreaming about my upcoming evening meal. I have grand visions of a gluttonous feast where I’d recover all the calories I’d missed out on at once.
That’s probably unlikely to happen as I heard many people say that they could not eat much after 3 days of water only.
I’m just happy that I was able to do this.
I thought about quitting many times, but was able to pull it off. And YES, I’m really proud.
I really recommend this experience to anyone. I did a lot of research, but wasn’t sure what to expect.
This was way more than just a 3 day water fasting for me.
I feel like a new person.
I struggled to quit smoking and drinking for so long without much success…..to be able to pause everything for, at least 3 days, is a big accomplishment for me.
I feel like I gained confidence, too. Perhaps, I can really change my lifestyle around. I feel healthy physically and mentally. ( At least for now :))
Who knows what will happen once I start eating, but I’m really looking forward to a new challenge.
SO….if you ever thought about doing it….TRY IT!!!
Believe me when I say this, if I can do it, you can definitely do it as well.
